The two most common questions I am asked from someone who wants start a blog are:
“What topic should I blog about?” and “How should I name my blog?”
Choosing the right blog topic can seem difficult at first, but it doesn’t need to be!
My best advice for you is to create a blog around a topic that you are passionate about, that you are good at or that you are willing to learn. This will make blogging more fun and you won’t feel it’s another task in your daily routine (blogging is my favourite part of the day).

The good thing is that you can blog about several things or about one specific topic such as money-making tips. You decide what you like the most.
Your blog can be about any topic you like. Do not be afraid of choosing a topic you are not 100% sure, you can always change the topic and direction of your blog.
Plus, you can monetize all types of blogs.

This list can go on and on. That’s one of the best things about having a blog; you decide what to write about.
Start it broad and narrow it down
One of the most common issues I found out in people starting their blogs is that they like many topics and they can’t decide what to blog about – gardening, food, health and fitness or even parenting.
It’s not easy to decide which topic you’ll enjoy the most and at the moment, deciding between gardening and parenting seems like a drama.
What to do in this situation? Start it broad and narrow it down towards a topic.
Create your blog and start writing about all the topics you love. After some time you will drop some of the topics just because initially you thought you have a lot to say, but after a couple of posts you ran out of ideas. Other times, you will realise that in fact, that topic is not your niche.
After a few blog posts, you will see which topic makes you feel more comfortable (it can be more than one).
In my case, I started blogging about so many things and after some time I ended blogging about personal finance and blogging (two topics). Each of this topics also has some subcategories. For example, I blog about making money, saving money and budgeting, which belong to the personal finance topic.
Plus, once in a while I write random articles about random stuff. After all, it’s my own blog and I am the one deciding what to blog about! š
How should I name my blog?
This is probably the next question you have in your mind.
If you have a clear blog topic, you can use your topic’s keywords for your blog name. Try to make it catchy and easy to remember.
Funny titles are easy to remember, for example, a blog’s name like www.DancingWithPenguins.com is great for a blog about animals.
Another example, www.LaraSavesMoney.com, which could be a name for a personal finance blog. My blog name is www.PassiveIncomeWise.com because I blog about passive income and personal finance, then I added the “wise” just to make it a bit more personal.
However, if you don’t know exactly what to blog about, you can still decide a blog name. Some good examples are www.JustAGirlAndHerBlog.com (this is Abby’s blog) and www.DailySurprises.co.uk (my wife’s blog). These two examples don’t use any specific keywords, the first one is about decoration and the second one is about food recipes.
Other bloggers simply use their own names, for example, www.JessicaGavin.com
The good thing about these kinds of blog names is that you can change from one topic to another and your blog title will be still great.
Get some blog name ideas, ask your family and friends about what they think, or contact me for advice and I will be happy to help.
If choosing a name is what is holding you back from starting a blog, remember that it doesn’t exist the perfect blog name, all you need to do is to choose a blog name which is perfect for you.
Are you ready to start your blog?
By now you should have your blog topic (or topics) and your blog name. What’s next? Starting your own blog!
If you are determined to start your own blog, I recommend you two options:
- Enroll in my Start A Money Making Blog5 Day FREE Course. You will have your blog up and running after the third day of the course.
- Follow my tutorial on How To Start A Blog Step By Step with Bluehost. This option is better if you can’t wait anymore to create your own blog.
I’ve negotiated with Bluehost a special price for my readers who want to start a blog at $2.95/mo (original price is $7.99/mo) when you get the 36 months plan. This is one of the best deals that you can find out there on the internet. Plus, Bluehost is a great company and it’s where I started my blog.
Blogging is one of the best things have ever happened in my life. I’m so happy that I started my own blog two years ago. I can’t imagine how would be my life without it. Plus, my blog is making $1,000+/mo that it’s also a great advantage for our personal finances.
Did you already decide your blog topic? How do you plan to name your blog? What blogging ideas do you recommend?
Hi Francisco! I’ve enjoyed reading your blog. I’ve recently had some doubts about what I should call my new blog, especially because the topics I had in mind were very diverse. I couldn’t insert a keyword there, and I couldn’t just limit myself. That’s why I decided to just go ahead with my name, as everything that’s going to be published on the blog is written or approved by me. That sounded more logical. Thanks again for helping me make the choice!
You are welcome Stefan. Well done with the name choice of your blog š
Hi Francisco, these are great ideas that you have shared. I believe it is very timely with the global situation now. I’m currently working from home as well but I felt the need to be more productive. I have been thinking of starting a blog soon and I have been reading about how to go about it as well.
Thanks again for these. Cheers!
Thank you Gem. I totally agree, there is no better time to start a blog than right now
